A simple, organized resource to help you sell with confidence and maximize your earnings.

Creating Great Listings

Creating a great listing is about more than simply entering information it is about helping shoppers quickly understand what you are selling and giving them the confidence to make a purchase.

Clear photos, accurate descriptions, and complete information not only improve the shopping experience but also reduce questions and help your items sell faster.

This article will walk you through the key elements of creating complete, shopper friendly listings.

What You'll Learn

  • How to take effective listing photos

  • How to choose the correct category

  • How to write clear Brand and Description fields

  • How to organize your inventory using Bin Codes

  • When to use the Additional Details field

  • How to avoid common listing mistakes

Photos

Your photos are the first thing shoppers notice.  A clear, attractive first photo encourages shoppers to click on your listing and learn more about your item.

Each listing may include up to two photos.

Photo Best Practices

  • Use good lighting.

  • Photos need to be of the actual item you are selling. Stock photos are discouraged and should never be used as the first photo.

  • Use a clean, uncluttered background.

  • Make your first photo a clear view of the front of the item.

  • Use the second photo to highlight important details, patterns, labels, or unique features.

Common Photo Mistakes

Avoid these common issues:

  • Blurry photos

  • Poor lighting

  • Cluttered backgrounds

  • Photos taken too far away

  • Uploading multiple images into a single photo field

Important: Each photo field should contain only one image.

Although the Seller Portal allows multiple images to be selected, doing so causes problems during the import process and requires manual correction before your item can be listed.

Bin Codes (Optional)

Bin Codes are an optional organizational tool that can make preparing sold items much easier.

If you're selling a large number of items, assigning each item to a storage location allows you to quickly find it when it's time to prepare for drop-off.

You can create any system that works best for you.

Examples include:

  • Bin 1, Bin 2, Bin 3

  • A, B, C

  • Blue Bin, Green Bin

  • Basement, Guest Room, Hall Closet

There is no "right" system. The goal is simply to help you locate your inventory quickly.

Category

Selecting the correct category helps shoppers find your item while browsing the online store.

Choose the category where you believe a shopper would naturally look for your item.

If you're unsure, use the search feature to locate the best category.

Don't overthink it—most items have one category that clearly fits.

Brand & Description

Enter the brand exactly as it appears on the manufacturer's label.  Correct brand names help shoppers locate your items when searching or filtering inventory.

Your description should be short, clear, and descriptive.  Think about how you would identify the item if you were shopping online.

Examples:

  • Patagonia Navy Hooded Jacket

  • Gap Red Sweatshirt

  • Hanna Andersson Pink Floral Dress

  • Melissa & Doug Wooden Train Set

More Details

Use the More Details field to include information that helps shoppers better understand your item.

Examples include:

  • Like New Condition

  • Excellent Used Condition

  • Hood Detaches

  • Adjustable Waist

  • Matching Bloomers Included

These details often answer common shopper questions before they're asked.

Quality Standards

Before entering an item into your inventory, inspect it carefully.

Please do not list items with:

  • Stains

  • Holes or pinholes

  • Frayed cuffs

  • Missing buttons

  • Broken snaps

  • Broken zippers

  • Excessive pilling

  • Hand-sewn repairs

  • Worn-out elastic

Taking a few extra moments to inspect each item helps maintain the quality shoppers have come to expect from GCOS.

💡 GCOS Pro Tip

Think Like a Shopper!

Ask yourself:

  • Would I click on this photo?

  • Can I clearly tell what this item is?

  • Does the description answer my questions?

  • Would I feel confident purchasing this item?

Small improvements to your listings can make a big difference in how quickly your items sell.
